Tim Cotter
Chairman and Managing Director
Timothy J. Cotter is a Managing Director of Sullivan, Cotter and Associates, Inc. In his more than 35 years of consulting, Tim has worked with a wide variety of employers in designing and evaluating reward systems for all types of employees.

Tim’s extensive experience in the health care field has included:

  • Working with more than 400 health care organizations on board, executive, physician and staff compensation matters, including hospitals, health systems, medical schools, academic medical centers, physician groups and health plans
  • Appearing regularly before a wide variety of health care groups at the national, state and local levels to discuss pay-related issues
  • Serving as a faculty member for the management education programs of leading universities and professional organizations.

As an author, Tim’s work has appeared in a multitude of professional journals, including Trustee, Exempt Organization Tax Review, Healthcare Financial Management, Board Source, HR Pulse, Personnel, and Personnel Journal. His most recent article, “Dodd-Frank: The Spillover Impact on Nonprofit Healthcare,” appeared in the July 2010 issue of Health Lawyers Weekly.

In 2009, Tim co-authored two of The Governance Institute’s E-Briefings: “Preparing for Increased Executive Compensation Scrutiny in 2009” and “Adjusting the Executive Compensation Program.”  He wrote an article entitled, “Trends and Issues in Healthcare Executive Compensation” for the National Center for Healthcare Leadership. He is also a co-author for a chapter, “Transforming CEO Evaluation in a Multi-Unit Healthcare Organization,” which was included in the book The Practice of Evidenced-Based Management. He is quoted extensively in the ACHE’s Contracts for Healthcare Executives.

Tim earned a Master of Labor and Industrial Relations from Michigan State University. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. He is a member of several professional organizations, including WorldatWork, which designated him as a Certified Compensation Professional.
