2009 Physician On-Call Pay Survey
The 2009 survey report contains data from 142 healthcare organizations across the U.S. Approximately one-half of the participants are trauma centers. This survey reports on-call pay practices and actual on-call pay rates for 34 physician specialties including mid-level providers. Data contained in this report were collected from April 2009 through September 2009.
On-call pay practices reported include:
- Percent of physicians receiving on-call pay by specialty and trauma center status
- Forms of on-call pay including percent of physicians receiving compensation for providing coverage, and/or providing services
- Practices used to compensate physicians for providing services when called in
- Retention of professional fees
- Compensation for excess call
On-call pay rates are reported by specialty and type of call (restricted and unrestricted):
- For all organizations
- For trauma centers, non-trauma centers and Level I trauma centers
- For all organizations by trauma and non-trauma call
- Regional unrestricted on-call pay rates (median values only)
- For 6 combined specialty areas including Medicine, Pediatric Medicine, Pediatric Surgical Specialties, Primary Care, Primary Care - Remote Location/Critical Access, and Surgical Specialties
