Physician On-Call Pay Expenditures on the Rise
3rd Annual Physician On-Call Pay Survey Released By SullivanCotter
(Detroit) September 14, 2007 - Sullivan, Cotter and Associates, Inc. has published its third annual survey of physician on-call pay rates and practices, the 2007 Physician On-call Pay Survey Report. The report, a respected industry resource, which sets national compensation guidelines, outlines the physician on-call pay practices of 160 participating heath centers. The report contains data on the rates paid – typically hourly – for 32 physician specialty areas.
According to this year’s survey, 60% of the survey respondents reported that their physician on-call pay expenditures had increased in the past 12 months. While an additional 40% reported that their on-call pay expenditures had remained about the same; none reported that they had decreased.
This year, 72% percent of respondents – nearly half being trauma centers – have experienced difficulty finding physicians to provide on-call coverage. “Last year, nearly a quarter of trauma centers and 13% of non-trauma centers had to shut down a service due to a lack of physicians available on-call,” said Kim Mobley, the survey director and principal with SullivanCotter, “but this year those shut down numbers are lower.” Mobley attributes this reduction to the fact that hospitals are using strategies for addressing call coverage such as hiring physicians specifically to provide call coverage. This has resulted in the emergence of some new physician specialists called Laborists, Sugicalists, and Traumatologists.
“Not all physicians receive on-call pay,” explained Mobley. “We are finding that hospitals take a number of factors into consideration when determining which physician specialties will receive pay for providing call coverage. Three key variables include the frequency of the call; the likelihood of being called in when on call and the intensity of the services provided when called in.”
The numbers from the Physician On-Call Pay Survey speak to this trend. While 80% of participants cited local market factors as influencing physician on-call pay compensation decisions, non-market influences also ranked high, including “Frequency of call” (54%) and “Likelihood of being called in” (47%). These variables also affect the rates paid for the various physician specialties. When it comes to on-call pay rates, “There are some highly compensated specialties that receive relatively low on-call rates of pay. These same specialties are often the ones that are also not as likely to be called in when on call; they are also less likely to receive on-call pay.”
The 2007 Physician On-call Pay Survey is now available for purchase. The cost is $150 for healthcare organizations and $500 for all other types of organizations.
