2005 Physician On-call Pay Survey Released by Sullivan, Cotter and Associates, Inc.

(DETROIT, April 27, 2005) - Sullivan, Cotter and Associates, Inc. has published its first annual survey of physician on-call compensation, the 2005 Physician On-call Pay Survey. Over 160 healthcare organizations across the U.S. participated in the survey. Of these, 86% require their physicians to provide on-call coverage. The survey report outlines the definition of "on-call," the various forms of on-call compensation, twenty-five specialty areas for which on-call pay is provided to physicians, hourly and daily on-call rates, and much more.

According to the survey, some organizations require the physician to remain on the premises ("restricted on-call") and others simply require the doctor to be able to respond to the call within a specified length of time ("unrestricted on-call"). Moreover, the most common specialties for which on-call pay is provided are Ob/Gyn, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Trauma Surgery. The data also reveal that on-call is typically paid as an hourly rate or a daily stipend (for 16 or 24 hours of on-call). However, some organizations also have weekly and annual stipends.

"The survey findings show that on an hourly basis the surgical subspecialties are paid more for on-call than the medicine subspecialties and primary care. For example, the median hourly rate paid to surgical subspecialists for unrestricted on-call is $26.07, while the median hourly rate paid to medicine subspecialists and primary care for unrestricted on-call is $20.49 and $19.85 respectively," notes Kim Mobley, a Sullivan Cotter & Associates principal.

The 2005 Physician On-call Pay Survey is now available for purchase. The cost is $75 to healthcare organizations and $250 for all other types of organizations.
