Jim Nelson is a Managing Principal in the Minneapolis office of Sullivan, Cotter and Associates, Inc. Prior to joining the firm, Jim was an Executive Vice President and the Executive Compensation Practice Leader for a national consulting firm.

Jim brings more than 25 years of compensation consulting experience to SullivanCotter's clients. For the past 20 years, Jim has focused exclusively on total compensation consulting in health care. He has consulted to more than 300 health care organizations on a variety of matters. His extensive experience includes:

  • Governance consulting
  • Compensation, benefit and employment contract analysis
  • Total compensation program design and implementation
  • Consulting to organizations in the midst of mergers and organizational change.

Jim’s consulting experience encompasses the entire spectrum of health care organizations, including large integrated health systems, academic medical centers, hospitals, managed care organizations, health care associations and specialty organizations.

A nationally-recognized expert and thought leader in the executive compensation consulting field, Jim has presented to a variety of health care groups and associations, including The Harvard School of Public Health, American College of Healthcare Executives, National Association’s of Public Hospitals and Community Health Centers, Premier, Child Health Corporation of America and many state health care associations.

Additionally, Jim’s work has been cited in numerous health care publications. He has published and lectured extensively on a variety of compensation, regulatory and governance topics throughout his career. 

Jim received his degree in finance from the University of St. Thomas and his Chartered Financial Consultant designation from the American College.
